LAS VEGAS — Everywhere you looked at this year’s International CES, you saw a wearable device. New players, new upgrades, new colors, designs and materials, and new capabilities were on display from start-ups, established CE brands and top fashion designer houses alike. The nascent category was not the home run that some retailers expected in this past holiday season, but the potential of the category was obvious to anyone who walked the show.

LAS VEGAS — It was a busy week for New Age Electronics during International CES. The CE and IT distributor was selected by Bang & Olufsen to extend the retail reach of its B&O Play line of music systems, speakers and headphones; expanded its portfolio of emerging tech devices; and bestowed its Retailer of the Year Award to Walmart.com and Dell.com at a customer appreciation party capped by a Goo Goo Dolls concert.

Hall of Fame: Fred Towns: Playing his Part in Convergence
Before he was the president of New Age Electronics, the retail division of SYNNEX Corp., Fred Towns—like so many others—started at the small-scale retail level.
After growing up in Maryland and graduating from Towson State University, Towns’ first job in the industry was in the early 1980s with Stereo Discounters, a retailer in his native Maryland that was part of the Dixie High Five chain that later became Circuit City. Having bought sound and lighting equipment, he
was eventually hired as part of the pro source team, and later moved into the retail side, eventually trained as a retail sales manager at the chain’s top store.

New Age Hosts Goo Goo Dolls at CES
Las Vegas — Alternative rock band Goo Goo Dolls will headline New Age Electronics’ annual CES Gala next week.
The Buffalo, N.Y., band, fronted by guitarist and lead singer John Rzeznik, is perhaps best known for its breakout ballad “Iris,” which ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 Pop Songs chart covering the years 1992-2012.
